Sri Lanka routed

South Africa, on the back of another Vernon Philander five-wicket haul, completed a masterful performance and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match Sunfoil Series when they routed Sri Lanka by an innings and runs on day three of the first Sunfoil Test.

Resuming at a miserable 38/4, Thilan Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews tried to resurrect what was remaining of the innings. Samaraweera was particularly forceful off Philander, but after a conference between Dale Steyn, Mark Boucher and Philander, the latter got rid of Mathews (5) with one that seamed in and went away from the batsman.

Samaraweera tried his best to hold up with a well played 32 considering the circumstances, but he too failed the offstump line examination when he tickled one from Morne Morkel through to Boucher to leave the Sri Lankan’s tottering at 70/6.

Kaushal Silva, who survived a pair and Thisara Perera had a bit of fun in their 34-run stand, with Perera taking 10 off Imran Tahir’s first over and bullishly drove Steyn through cover.

Steyn got his revenge when he coerced Perera (21) to drive loosely at one that was leaving him, with Graeme Smith snaffling the catch at first slip. Enter the feisty Rangana Herath, who smoked Steyn and Philander for two sixes over long on, while his more accomplished colleagues found the edges more than the centre.

Their resistance was short-lived, though, as Silva (17), glided a Tahir legbreak to first slip. Philander, who was off the field for a short while, came back to administer the last rites, dismissing Chanaka Welegedara (10) and Herath (23) to end what was a pitiful Sri Lankan batting performance.
