State outraged at brutal murder of lesbian

Government has expressed outrage at the murder of an East Rand woman, apparently because of her sexual orientation.

“Violent acts such as this reinforce the existing social inequalities, based on gender and sexuality and cannot go unchallenged,” acting government spokesperson Phumla Williams said in a statement today.

Williams urged South Africans to give expression to the Constitution, which recognised and guaranteed equality.

“This fundamental right enjoins South Africans not to discriminate against anyone on several grounds, including gender, sex, and sexual orientation.”

Duduzile Zozo’s body was found in Thokoza, on the East Rand, on Sunday morning. Her mother Thuziwe Zozo reportedly said she suspected her daughter was killed because of her sexuality.

The Ekurhuleni metro police pledged to work around the clock to make sure Zozo’s killers were put behind bars.

“Vigorous around the clock efforts are under way ... to ensure that the perpetrators of this horrendous act are put behind bars soon,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“Our conscience should not allow us to sleep peacefully until the persons responsible for this despicable act are apprehended.”
