Stock-theft guards rescued from snow

2011-08-03 07:20

About 19 stock-theft guards, who were stationed on top of the Drakensberg mountains, had to be rescued because of heavy snow.

Last week, a police helicopter checked on the men, and took them extra rations of food and coal and the guards were fine, Colonel Trevor May said.

“But the snow is very heavy. People are saying it is the heaviest since 2004. At Tentkop, where some of the men are, it is a metre thick.

“There were some concerns being raised by the communities where the men come from,” he said.

The men were brought down from the mountains over the weekend, The Herald Online reported today.

One guard had been left in place to care for the string of police ponies which were kept on the border, May said.

Police flew up on Monday and yesterday to relieve this guard and drop off a replacement.

The guards were housed alone or in pairs in 10 shipping containers, at key points along the Lesotho border with the north-astern Eastern Cape, in the Rhodes area.

May said they played a key role in curbing stock thieves who came over the border.
