Stores close doors for Sunday funeral

2013-12-11 14:00

South African retailers and other businesses are closing their doors en masse on Sunday to show their respect on the day of Nelson Mandela’s funeral in Qunu in the Eastern Cape.

Today, Woolworths became the latest retailer to announce that its stores will not open on Sunday.

“As a mark of respect and in honour of the legacy that Mandela leaves our Nation, all Woolworths stores in South Africa will be closed on Sunday, 15 December 2013,” the company’s CEO Ian Moir said in a brief statement.

Earlier this week, Massmart – which owns Game, DionWired, Makro, Builder’s Warehouse, CBW, Jumbo, Cambridge Food and Shield – announced that all its stores would be shut on Sunday.

Shoprite and Checkers stores will also be closed, as will all branches of Clicks.

Gym chain Virgin Active, too, will close its branches across the country.
