Striking Gautrain bus drivers leave passengers stranded

2014-08-20 17:16

Gautrain bus commuters were left stranded this afternoon after bus drivers left their posts.

“Please note that a wildcat strike by Gautrain bus drivers in Johannesburg has resulted in the suspension of bus services from Park, Rosebank, Sandton, Midrand and Rhodesfield stations,” said Errol Braithwaite, the operations, marketing and communications executive for Bombela Concession Company.

The strike came as a surprise to the company.

“They arrived to work this morning and everything was operating as normal. But in the afternoon at about 3pm they decided to walk off,” said Braithwaite.

Bus commuters will now have to find alternative means of transport as the company’s bus services in Joburg have been suspended.

Braithwaite said at this point management was unable to identify the origins of the strike but would contact the unions to find out more.

“This all happened without warning or discussion,” he said.

The past few days have not been great for the service provider.

Just last week, the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) which represents the train drivers, threatened strike action following wage disputes with management.

The matter was resolved after two days of intense talks and negotiations.

“This strike is not linked or connected to the threatened (train) drivers strike. The bus and train drivers are from different companies,” said Braithwaite.

At this stage, he said the train services will be unaffected.
