Striking workers waiting

2012-08-15 15:11

It’s been a long day of waiting for striking mineworkers in Marikana, near Rustenburg.

They began assembling on a koppie near Karee Mine Shaft 1 early this morning, hoping for word from Lonmin on their demand for a 300% pay increase.

Instead they spent the day negotiating with unidentified people hiding inside an armoured police car which was part of a huge contingent of riot police who arrived at the scene this morning.

Police would not say who was negotiating with the workers or what was being discussed.

A workers’ representative said the three men in the car refused to identify themselves. This resulted in a deadlock, because the workers felt their demands were not going to be addressed.

The situation remains tense, with police watching over the proceedings.

The workers say they are not attached to any union.

Ten people have been killed since the strike turned violent on Friday.
