Strong winds damage planes

2012-02-24 09:11

Seven small planes have been damaged by strong winds at the Grand Central Airport in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, Beeld reported.

According to the newspaper, cranes would be used today to lift and turn two Cessnas that flipped over when wind gusted through the airport.

The pilot’s door of a third plane was torn off and landed on the aircraft’s roof on Wednesday. Four other planes were less seriously damaged.

The Cessnas were the property of Flight Training Services and High Flyers Aviation.

High Flyers owner Eric Venter said the damage to his plane was estimated at R700 000.

Airport manager Gary Renault told Beeld that the wind was so strong it uprooted seven trees in New Road, Midrand. He said the airport was fully operational and that business was proceeding as usual.
