2011-08-19 11:55

SuperSport has won the rights to broadcast the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches for the next five years at a cost of “well over R2 billion”, the league’s chairperson Irvin Khoza announced today.

The pay-per-view channel has also gained the rights to do internet and mobile streaming of the matches.

The deadline for the bids was 5pm yesterday. It now means that the partnership continues as SuperSport was also the broadcast rights holders in the previous five-year term.

This term cost the channel R1.6 billion.

“Competition was fierce – it was a close call,” said Khoza.

“It was not about the money but it was well over R2 billion.”

The new deal will start next season (2012/13) as SuperSport is in the final year of the initial agreement, signed in 2007.

SABC came close during the bidding process.
