After a week marked by grief and mourning, Beyoncé Knowles brought the entertainment world to a standstill for a different reason on Friday?–?she quietly released a full album on iTunes.

Knowles, whose fans have long nicknamed her “the Queen”, released a collection of 14 songs and 17 music videos in the early hours of Friday morning with no prior warning or prepublicity.

The Daily Mail reported: “The 14-song collection, which is self-titled, caused iTunes to temporarily crash as fans rushed to download it.” According to Billboard, 800?000 copies were sold on iTunes in three hours.

Presumably, while waiting for the songs and videos to land in their iTunes queues, people took to Twitter to declare their undying love for, and support of, Knowles.

Leading the tweets of support, the Daily Mail reports, was Beyoncé’s younger sister, Solange, who gushed: “So my sister is a f***ing G. Beyoncé, the visual album out now.

“I’m sitting here watching THE most artful and perfect project ever....@Beyoncé. Just layed me out. #proudsister.”

There have been several album releases by other women pop stars in the past few months?–?among them Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Britney Spears. However, these have all been preceded by months of publicity, single releases and interviews.

Knowles, though, announced her latest release?–?her fifth studio album – on Instagram. The post read “Surprise!” and featured images from the videos she released with the album.

Collaborations on what Knowles is calling her “exclusive visual album” include appearances from husband Jay Z, former Destiny’s Child members?–?Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams?–?Frank Ocean, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Drake and even her baby daughter, Blue Ivy.

In a later statement about the release, she said: “I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it before. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans.

“I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans,” said the singer.
