Survivors gear up for Mexico treasure

South African celebrities are scrambling to be picked for a reality series not only because they want to increase their profiles or revive dying careers, but because – like most of us – they need the money.

If Hykie “I’m not doing it for the money” Berg’s reaction at winning the R1 million Survivor SA: Maldives was anything to go by, then money is everything.

This week, another popular reality series revealed eager celebrity contestants who will be marooned on an island to compete for a R1 million prize.

Rapper Siyabonga “Slikour” Metane, singer Phila Mazibuko, Poppy Ntshongwana of 5FM, comedian Tshepo Mogale, club DJ Zinhle Jiyane and models Tracy McGregor and Joelle Kayembe will be taking part in the fourth instalment of the Tropika Island of Treasure, a Survivor-esque reality show in Cancún, Mexico.

Metane (29) said: “I wish music could earn me the luxury of just getting that much money.

“People look at me and think that I have it all. I work seven jobs to keep the lifestyle I have and it’s not easy.”

Jiyane (28) shared with City Press how much she wanted to start a family and also improve her recording studio, but that she couldn’t do it because she has a “pay-as-you-go job”.

“I would really love to stay at home and have a baby, but I can’t because with deejaying it’s about being out there and working constantly. When you stay at home you do not get paid.”

As for Kayembe, the Democratic Republic of Congo-born model, she has been in the spotlight during a nasty break-up with her businessman “husband”, Bongani Mbindwane.

Their divorce ended in Kayembe being locked out of their Sandhurst, Joburg home, and her car and designer threads being ripped away.

This week the swimsuit model admitted to being “keen” on the prize money. “I am not wealthy, I am comfortable financially. It’s my dad who is wealthy, not me.

“People need to be careful with that because it can be deceiving when some people claim their parents’ wealth as theirs.”

While all the celebs seem to be eyeing the prize, it will ultimately go to someone who plays the best game. The winners in previous seasons include Pam Andrews of Rhythm City, model Shashi Naidoo and rapper JR Bogopa.
