Suspect tries to sell stolen goods back to owner

A 24-year-old was subjected to mob justice after he allegedly tried to sell stolen goods back to their owner in Thabong, Free State police said today.

The man allegedly went from house to house yesterday and eventually to a home where the owner of the kettle and iron he was selling recognised his appliances, Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.

The appliances’ owner alerted the community, leading to the suspected thief being attacked and accused of breaking into several other houses in the area.

He was rescued by police.

The owner of the appliances reported to police that the items were stolen from his home during a burglary on Thursday night.

When officers asked the suspect for his side of the story he allegedly confessed to the community’s allegations, which resulted in his arrest.

He led police to two houses where stolen groceries, clothes, gadgets and electrical appliances were recovered.

The man was expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrates Court on Monday.
