Suspected serial rapist in court

2010-11-15 07:31

A 28-year-old man suspected of raping at least 12 women in Hillbrow since August is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said the man, who was alleged to have targeted young black women aged between 19 and 21 in and around the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas, was arrested in KwaMashu outside Durban in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

“The South African Police Service, in particular the task team, would also like to express its gratitude to all the callers that have assisted the efforts of the team to track down this alleged perpetrator,” Naidoo said.

The Durban central dog unit and the Durban organised crime unit assisted Gauteng police in following the man’s trail since he fled his home in southern Johannesburg just before police raided it on Wednesday.

The man is believed to have operated in the following manner. He allegedly approached a group of women and invited them to celebrate his birthday with him at a nearby restaurant or bar.

He later asked one of them to accompany him to fetch his sister or a friend, taking a metered-taxi into Hillbrow or central Johannesburg.

He then lured his victim to a hotel room under the pretext of fetching his sister or the friend, or his luggage, and then raped her.
