Series addict Babalwa Shota is ecstatic to have control of her TV remote back

Tuesday night was the first time in six weeks I finally got to sit on my favourite armchair, remote in hand, and enjoy uninterrupted TV viewing.

The festive season had not been kind. I had to relinquish my remote powers to little people who invaded my home and turned my TV room into their own fiefdom.

On any given Tuesday – or Thursday or Saturday – I woke up to the soundtrack of Christina Aguilera belting out “ooohhhh, sometimes?.?.?.?I get a good feeleeeeeng?.?.?.?” which the girls, seven and 10 years of age, proceeded to sing along to. I had to resist my own feeling – which was to duct tape their mouths and lock them up in the laundry room.

Besides the too-sexy-for-their-viewing-pleasure Burlesque, which was watched twice and sometimes three times a day, I had the candyfloss-sweet voices of Barbie Mariposa and other fairies of the enchanted forest to contend with. That DVD was always on the top of the pile with the Barbie Christmas disk and Burlesque.

When the DVD player was not in overuse, the DStv was constantly on the cartoon bouquet cluster. Now, I love cartoons, especially the Sunday marathons of Dexter’s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Phineas and Ferb and The Fairly OddParents.

However, after being force-fed a diet of animation, precocious Disney kids (I was beginning to know the characters of iCarly) and sing-along songs, I am done! I shall get reacquainted with my news channels, check out some wildlife on National Geographic, revisit the past on History, laugh out loud on Comedy Central, enjoy my favourite series on Universal and Sony TV and lose myself on the six movie channels.

Best of all, I’ll be able to catch up on all the series – new and old – on DStv on Demand. I missed too many episodes of Arrow, The Fixer, Chicago Fire, Perception and many more.

Never before have I been so happy to say goodbye to family, especially little girls who like to use my nail polish on original wooden floors, draw flowers with MAC lipstick on the wall and dislocate various household fixtures.

But more than anything, I’m grateful to the TV gods for granting me my remote and armchair back.
