TV Guide: Dragging out the divas

2012-11-02 11:22

Confession time: I have a man to thank for my new-found confidence to sashay around in skirts and heels. I have always been the resident tomboy in the office and avoided all the girlie stuff and frills.

But things took a turn for the better when I started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race on Vuzu.

The show is about finding America’s next drag queen, but RuPaul knows how to make it about him and he makes sure he gets enough of the spotlight in each episode.

I just love hearing him say phrases such as “Shante, you stay!” and “sashay away” after contestants lip-sync for their lives to avoid being eliminated.

Aside from the car and auction shows, there isn’t anything on TV that’s got me hooked more than these queens in action.

I first saw Andrew RuPaul Charles alongside Elton John in their 1994 duet Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. It’s a classic with Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the video. And I think that’s why it always stayed in my mind. Then he appeared in the epitome of drag films, with a small role in To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar.

RuPaul makes a beautiful woman when he’s in costume, with big hairpieces and stunning dresses. He coined the word “glamazon” back in 1994.

At the age of 52, he doesn’t look a day older than 35.

He wasn’t always this glamorous and perhaps that’s what draws me to RuPaul, given my passion for anything on wheels. He used to be a car salesman, a drug addict and went from rags to riches. He overcame his struggles when he was given a recording contract, starred in films and made his mark in the entertainment world. Today he is a queen in his own right.

He, or she, is a heroine to those boys who can’t enter America’s Next Top Model. He is their Tyra Banks.

As hilarious as the contestants are to watch, with all their catfights and bitchy attitudes, they always show immense respect towards RuPaul and his panel of celebrity judges. He gives advice when needed, puts his foot down when necessary, but always encourages them through challenges.

He’s all about bringing out your inner diva and heaven knows I need that sometimes.

There aren’t any Season 5 episodes online and my life has never felt this empty just because of a TV show being off air. I could easily watch all four seasons again.
