Kelly Clarkson
Season 1 (US)

Clarkson was the most unlikely winner of Idol. She slipped under the radar throughout the first season of the show and went on to win. Her Chuck Taylors and tattered jeans made her loveable the world over, earning numerous Grammy awards along the way. Her sell-out concerts and platinum-selling records are a testament to what an Idol winner can accomplish.

Heinz Winckler
Season 1 (South Africa)

The original SA Idols may have received mixed reviews from critics. After winning the first local season, Winckler proved his worth when he placed fourth in the World Idol competition. He beat out Will Young. He also recorded the track Chasing Shadows for the Disney movie Treasure Planet. He’s by far the most memorable local winner.

Will Young
Season 1 (UK)

Young was the dark horse throughout the first season of UK Idol. With his lisp and boyish smile, the singer won over the hearts of the entire country, beating out Gareth Gates and breaking many a girl’s heart. The singer shot up the UK and international charts with songs such as Leave Right Now and Evergreen. Not bad for someone with quite a lisp.

Guy Sebastian
Season 1 (Australia)

Sebastian was the first official winner of Australian Idol. Since winning the series, he has released five albums. The first four albums reached the top 4 on Australian charts, and all achieved multiplatinum accreditation. His first album, Just As I Am, sold more than 480?000 units and was announced as one of the highest-selling albums of the decade.

Kurt Nilsen
Season 1 (Norway)

The first winner of the Norwegian version of Idol, Kurt Nilsen, began his career as a plumber before winning the competition. He then went on to win the World Idol competition, beating Kelly Clarkson and Will Young. His latest album, Rise to the Occasion, saw him teaming up with American legend Willie Nelson. Not bad, huh?
