TV guide: All the right ingredients

2010-10-15 10:26

The sexual assault accusations levelled at Remy Gonzalez made international headlines when it was discovered he was the brother-in-law of Cake Boss chief Buddy Valastro. Such is the popularity of this family reality TV show.

The staff’s talent at Carlo’s Bake Shop, however, is the reason the Valastro family is streets ahead of other vacuous reality shows.

Valastro, who took over his father’s bakery at 17, concedes that baking has changed since his father’s days of sweating in
the kitchen.

He says: “He didn’t have the mediums that I have now. My dad never worked with modelling chocolate or any of that type of stuff. He just really had cake and buttercream.

“While growing up, I told my father that one day people from all over are going to know who we are and what we do. I tried to get people to produce the show for years and had no luck.

“Finally, TLC called me and said: ‘We’re thinking of doing a cake show.’ I said: ‘Well, I have a great idea for one.’ And now we’re shooting Season 4 of Cake Boss.

“It’s pretty crazy what’s happened in the short amount of time. It’s a surreal feeling to be known for your passion.”

Despite the tradition of baking, which was passed down from his father, Valastro still believes that bakers aren’t necessarily born, but can be made.

He says: “I talk a lot about the American Dream. You put your mind to something and you practice, and anything can happen.”

The man who once baked a life-size cake in his wife’s image, says overnight fame is surreal: “It’s hard for me to go around because I’m recognised. I was in Italy and I got recognised even there. When I go to the bakery, sometimes there are fans waiting.

“I love taking pictures and meeting them. It’s part of the job. And without those people, we wouldn’t have anything.”

  • Cake Boss airs weekdays at 6.55pm on the Discovery Travel & Living channel on TopTV
