TV guide: The Kardashians are back

2011-04-01 10:50

Just when we thought we couldn’t handle any more Kardashian shenanigans, they’ve gone and wormed their way back on to our screens. Love them or hate them, there’s no way of ignoring them. And with producer Ryan Seacrest behind it all, who can blame E! for pushing the series? The family has become a sure bet for high ratings.

Kourtney has earned a reputation for being the no-nonsense sister when it comes to her five-sibling family and neurotic mother. Last season, she even raised a few eyebrows when she went against her family’s wishes to dump her baby daddy Scott Disick. Despite pleas from her family and the public, she just wouldn’t let go of the irresponsible, hard-drinking, frat boy.

However, with the birth of her son Mason last year, motherhood has certainly taught her a few lessons. She says: “I think just putting Mason first before anything has made me become less selfish. I’ve also learnt to enjoy the simple things in life.

“I never knew sitting on a swing or going down a slide could bring me so much happiness. When you hear Mason laugh its incredible.”

But after watching the first episode of Kourtney and Kim Take New York last Sunday, I came to the conclusion that it’s all more of the same – name-dropping, working out, shopping and penthouse apartments that no one can afford.

Kourtney begs to differ, saying: “I think being in New York really changes the vibe of the show. Everything’s different. I think Kim being single in the Big Apple also added a dynamic to the show and to our relationship, which you didn’t see in Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami. And for once you see Scott and I get on!”

While their good looks and extravagant lifestyles have earned them overnight success, the sisters have also been extremely shrewd at using micro-blogging site Twitter to keep their brand relevant.

Kourtney says: “I think social networking is a great way for us to keep in direct contact with our fans. It’s more personable and so instantaneous.”

She has become pragmatic in juggling motherhood, three D-A-S-H stores and fame – all in front of flashing paparazzi cameras.

She says: “At first I was really self-conscious of the cameras but now I’m used to them. I definitely like having downtime, but at the same time when the cameras are there it’s because I’m working with my family, which I love. I see it as a really long home movie.” The new spin-off sees the two eldest Kardashian sisters open up a new store in New York’s trendy SoHo. Recently, Kim and Khloé caused a fuss when they jetted into South Africa, and it appears Kourtney will be following suit soon. She says: “I would love to come to South Africa. Kim and Khloé say how wonderful it is, so I’m very jealous. As soon as Mason is old enough I’m coming over!”
