TV guide: The battle of the music shows

2010-09-18 14:36

Club 808

There couldn’t be two better hosts to steer Club 808 than Dineo Ranaka and Mo Flava. The two already have a relationship from working together in radio on YFM and this can be seen on screen. Ranaka’s no stranger to TV and Mo Flava is a self-proclaimed “soul head”. This gives him the authority needed to present a music show. 8/10
Time Slot:

The time slot of 7.30pm gets people in the weekend mood, whether going out or staying in. The show screams: “It’s the weekend, baby!” 8/10

Classy yet stylish and funky, the studio is modern and fresh. I like! 7/10

Social network status:
The show is enjoying success on both Facebook and Twitter. It has garnered 2 600 followers on Twitter within the space of a month! It has also become a real talking point on social networks every Friday night. 9/10

Overall look and feel:
Club 808 gets it right every week with its witty dialogue and themed shows. 8/10

Live presenter Bonang Matheba has milked the platform to further her career. The raspy-voiced presenter extended her 15 minutes of fame to radio, modelling and is now the face of Gert-Johan Coetzee Designs.

“Your girl B” certainly knows how to connect with her audience. Newcomer Minenhle Dlamini holds her own next to Matheba, but needs more experience. 7/10

Time Slot:
That 9pm slot is slightly awkward and it lasts 30 minutes too long. Move the show an hour forward so it plays in the background while people get ready for a night out. 6/10

The studio was in desperate need of a change. As for Matheba standing around for an hour, hands on hips, give the woman a chair! Thankfully, the show got a hot makeover this week. 6/10

Social network status:
Live has seen the potential of social networking and is using Twitter fairly well. Matheba is sitting on 8 000 followers and Live has about 3 000 followers. 6/10

Overall look and feel:
Live is enjoying its sixth season. The show is uplifting, fun and having a DJ on the decks adds to the easy feel of the show. 7/10
