TV guide: The girl next door tells all

2011-01-28 12:03

How do you relate to your character, Vanessa?

Well, I feel like Vanessa – and I’m not just saying this because I play her – is the most relatable character on the show.

Vanessa’s the one who is engaged in that world because of Dan Humphrey, but she still has a normal job and she’s not going to have parents who are going to bail her out moneywise. They just didn’t have that ‘here’s a million dollars’, which I think is more relatable.

What is your opinion of New York, and what places would you suggest to a visitor?

I think New York’s amazing. The culture, the art scene, the music scene, the restaurants – it’s all amazing.
I think that with Gossip Girl, the city plays its own character
in the show. Some of my favourite places include a restaurant in Chelsea called Tia Pol. I like the MoMA museum. There’s a bunch of thrift stores in Brooklyn that I enjoy going to. I like Central Park. I like to go reading there, or in the winter, I’ll go ice skating.

What was your reaction to the season finale?

I thought it was shocking, but after reading all the scripts every year there is always shocking moments and I’m going: ‘this can’t happen because of this, like, what the hell, what’s going on?’ But I think it was definitely a shocker that Georgina came back and was pregnant. Hopefully, she isn’t fooling us. I’m interested to see Vanessa’s reaction to the whole Dan and Serena thing.

What can viewers expect from Georgina?

I mean it’s going to probably take a minute for her to figure out her and Dan’s situation. Is he going to go back with Serena or is she going to ever trust him again? I mean, who knows, maybe she’ll meet some cool guy in Haiti and he moves to New York for her.

Did you gossip a lot when you were in school?

To be honest, I had my good group of girlfriends.

Did we get into petty fights over stuff, and did we think our hearts were broken when really we didn’t even know what love was? Yes, absolutely.

No one likes to be talked about and my mom always taught me that, so I tried to keep my nose in my own business. As a young girl I said a lot of stuff, but no one’s perfect. I tried not to do it about other people.

How do you keep your private life private when you are part of such a huge show?

I think you have to weed out people who you’re not sure what their ulterior motives are. Sometimes it’s hard for me hgrowing up in the Midwest. I’m a very trustworthy person, and I always give everyone the benefit of the doubt and think that they don’t have an agenda, which isn’t always the case.
