The Cave Man

SABC3, Wednesdays, 8pm

Two men, or alpha males, as the channel calls them – Janez Vermeiren from Top Billing and Lunga Shabalala of Selimathunzi – face off in a number of challenges and competitions that fascinate and interest men.

Vermeiren and Shabalala are presented as buddies on an adventure. Each episode possesses a generous dose of competition as they do everything from arm wrestling to bungee jumping.

The show is presented from a mancave and is hinged on what “real men” supposedly enjoy. They shine the spotlight on local celebrities, rendezvous with girls, engage in extreme sports, test high-tech gadgets, sample dude food and fashion trends, share fitness tips, and test-drive modern and classic cars.

The trouble with the show is that it presents two undeniably picture-perfect cover models. So some men might feel left out by these “cheese boys” who seem to have it all.

They should have roped in some regular guys who Joe Soap on the couch enjoying a beer can relate to.

The timing of the show is also suspect. How could the broadcaster unveil a show to extol men bang in the middle of Women’s Month?

But in the end, despite its misgivings, the show is about chemistry and mutual respect for the presenters who come across as old pals. – Lesley Mofokeng
