Hlubi Mboya has been very busy. Her new four-part miniseries Last Resort premieres on’s Mzansi Love: Kasi Style slot next week.

The hard-working actress told #Trending “it’s a short, sweet story” in which she plays Khanyi, “an opportunistic and career-driven bitch who wants Vuyo”. Khanyi finds herself in a love triangle with Nomsa (Lebo Mashile) and Vuyo (Buyile Mdladla).

Hlubi’s fans will be delighted to see her back on their TVs after a three-year break that began with her leaving Isidingo after a decade on the soapie.

That’s not all. She’s also working on a new sitcom called Mfolozi Street, which will air on SABC1 later this year. Hlubi’s character had dreams of being a Coca-Cola Pop Star but deferred the dream when she fell pregnant.

“She’s a single mother trying to find her dreams and, like anyone, makes the wrong choices along the way.”

But wait, there’s more. Hlubi has also finished shooting a feature film called Dora’s Peace alongside Khabonina Qubeka.

Never shy of singular, challenging roles, she plays a drug-addicted mother in Hillbrow. Dora’s Peace will be released in cinemas sometime next year. In the meantime, audiences can still enjoy her performance as gangster Gugu in iNumber Number.

I ask whether she is finally going to get to take a break after this. She laughs at the ridiculous suggestion. “Acting is my passion. It’s my craft. And being a freelancer is a test for how deep you’re willing to dig for your art.”

Hlubi has another call coming through, so I quickly ask her what’s next.

“At the moment it’s all about feature films, especially international films being shot here in South Africa. So I am gunning for international films. That’s what’s next.”
