Tamsanqa Jantjie debacle prompts light moment at Sona

2014-02-13 21:00

President Jacob Zuma’s announcement in Parliament that pupils will be able to learn sign language at schools from next year, had MPs across parties in stitches.

MPs burst out laughing, causing Zuma to laugh too, when he said in his state of the nation address tonight that the SA sign language curriculum would be available in schools from 2015 “to promote inclusivity and diversity”.

The in-joke was the debacle over “fake” sign language interpreter Tamsanqa Jantjie, which caused international embarrassment at former president Nelson Mandela’s memorial service last year.

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande waved his hands in the air during the extended laughter in the House.
