Tatane a ward candidate in municipal elections

2011-05-19 14:26

Andries Tatane was an independent candidate in this year’s municipal elections, it emerged at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) results centre today.

Tatane was killed in service delivery protests in the Eastern Free State town of Ficksburg on April 13, allegedly at the hands of police.

Congress of the People official Dennis Bloem said today that Tatane was a proportional list candidate.

“At the time of his death he was still a member of Cope. He never resigned,” he said.

Bloem said Tatane had entered the elections as an independent Ward 14 candidate, even though he was still an active member of Cope.

By 3.15pm it was unclear who had won that ward.

Eight policemen are accused of allegedly beating Tatane to death during service delivery protests.

SABC television footage showed a group of policemen beating Tatane with batons, after which he was seen holding his chest and looking down at blood on his chest. He collapsed and died 20 minutes later.
