A tavern owner in Centane, near Butterworth, suffered major damage to his shop and three vehicles while protecting a 19-year-old man from a group of attackers, Eastern Cape police said today.

The 50-year-old owner of Khabakazi tavern in Thafalofefe village tried to help the young man at 10pm yesterday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

He said: “While the tavern owner was busy protecting the boy, his two vehicles were set alight and also his truck was burnt.”

The reason for the attack was not clear, but the damage to the tavern owner’s property amounted to R310 865 and a case of arson was opened.

No arrests have been made.
