Tavern stampede victims buried

The last of the 10 people killed in a tavern stampede on New Year’s Eve was buried at the Ipelegeng cemetery this morning, the North West public safety department said today.

Acting Public Safety MEC Magome Masike had welcomed the announcement of investigations into police monitoring of taverns in Ipelegeng on New Year’s Eve, said spokesman Lesiba Kgwele.

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele announced the probe at a mass funeral of the victims at the Ipelegeng sports grounds on Sunday.

“MEC Masike commends the community of Ipelegeng for the restraint, calm and dignified manner in which they conducted themselves in the days leading to, during and after the funerals of the 10 victims of the stampede,” Kgwele said.

Seven men and three women, aged between 18 and 25, were trampled to death at the Basotho tavern in Ipelegeng shortly after 2am on New Year’s Day. The cause of the incident was still unclear.

Tavern owner James Thepiso Lepholletse (47) was arrested on January 1.

He appeared in court on Friday facing culpable homicide charges and was granted bail of R40 000.

He was expected in court again on February 25.
