Taxi deaths mount

2011-03-04 08:44

Ten people were injured when their minibus taxi overturned after colliding with a car in Roodepoort, on Joburg’s West Rand today, while 11 people were injured when their minibus taxi crashed into a car on the M4 highway in Durban, according to Netcare 911.

Of the taxi crash in Gauteng, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said: “All indications are that the minibus and a light motor vehicle had collided, the force of impact causing the former to overturn and roll several times before coming to rest on its roof in the roadway.”

He said in a statement that when paramedics arrived at the scene they found the injured had climbed out of the vehicle and were lying on the road and at the roadside.

“One woman had sustained significant head trauma and was in a critical condition. She was intubated and placed on a manual ventilator at the scene by Netcare 911 advanced life support paramedics.”

A helicopter airlifted the woman to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

Wicks said that, of the nine other passengers hurt in the crash, three sustained serious injuries.

All the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before being taken to nearby medical facilities.

The junction at Christiaan De Wet and Paul Kruger Roads in Wilgeheuwel, where the accident happened, was blocked while emergency service personnel cleared the scene and delays were expected afterwards.

Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said: “The taxi, for reasons unknown, smashed into the rear of a light motor vehicle causing extensive damage to the front of the passenger carrier.”

He said that when paramedics arrived at the accident scene, just before the Victoria Embankment, they found 11 people had sustained minor injuries.

They were stabilised and transported to the Addington and King Edward VIII hospitals.
