Taxi operators to meet city officials

2010-02-25 12:16

TAXI operators were to meet City of Johannesburg officials this

afternoon to voice their frustrations about the roll-out of the Bus Rapid

Transit’s (BRT) final phase.

United Taxi Association Forum spokesperson Ralph Jones said: “Most

of our cars were repossessed because of the BRT’s first phase that was

introduced last year.”

City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatise Modingoane confirmed

that a meeting was scheduled for 4pm.

Taxi operators called off a strike planned for today against the

BRT system.

Jones said the decision to suspend the stayaway was made in the

early hours of this morning after a meeting with the SA Commuters’

He accused the City of not informing taxi organisations about the

new buses to be introduced at the beginning of next month, and said they had

read about it in the media. Modingoane denied this and said: “We have documents,

and minutes of our meetings as proof that the taxi industry leadership has

always been involved.”
