A 49-year-old man accused of steering a taxi into oncoming traffic has appeared before the Ficksburg Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder.

Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini, Ficksburg police spokesperson, said Meshack Mabale faced a murder charge following an incident on Sunday when two minibuses collided, leading to the death of a 35-year-old man. Mabale was a passenger in the one of the minibuses at a time.

“It is alleged that while the taxi was in motion, Mabale, who was seated in the middle seat, stood up and approached the driver and turned the steering wheel towards the oncoming minibus taxi and as a result caused a head-on collision,” Dhlamini said.

He said the two minibuses collided on Einde Street, trapping the deceased in the wreck.“Jaws of Life were used to remove the dead body from the wreck,” he said.

Dhlamini said 16 passengers sustained injuries and were taken to Thiboloha and Bethlehem regional hospitals for medical treatment.Police are still trying to establish the identity of the deceased man.

Dhlamini said Mabale was arrested following statements from other passengers in the minibus. He was not asked to plead yesterday and was remanded in custody. His bail hearing has been set for October 20.
