Taxi users to protest today

2011-06-20 09:05

Taxi commuters were planning to protest against exclusive bus lanes in Soweto today, the SA National Taxi Council said.

Secretary-general Philip Taaibosch said he understood commuters had asked taxi operators to join their protest march, leaving many people stranded.

“I understand that commuters are complaining that they are arriving late at work because of the high occupancy of the lane where buses are now driving.

“Before, that lane was purely used by taxis, but now they are not using them any more because taxis should not be seen competing with the Bus Rapid Transit system.”

Taaibosch said he had heard commuters wanted a subsidy for their taxi fares.

“They also want subsidies like the bus commuters who are being subsidised to be on the buses.”

The Johannesburg Regional Taxi Council was not immediately available for comment.
