Taxi victim’s fiance in court

2011-09-20 08:57

The fiance of the advocate who was hit and dragged by a taxi in Lonehill has appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court in connection with charges including attempted murder.

According to a newspaper report today, Lourens Grobler (37) appeared briefly yesterday after he handed himself over to police, The Times reported. He was released on R5 000 bail.

Grobler faces charges of malicious damage to property, attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.

His fiancee, Kim McCusker, was knocked down by taxi driver Matume Thamage last week. This reportedly followed an accident involving the taxi and the vehicle she and Grobler were travelling in.

McCusker was reported to be in “intense pain and discomfort”, but was able to talk after being taken off the ventilators over the weekend.

Thamage, who faces charges of attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving, has been in custody since the incident. He is expected to apply for bail tomorrow.

He has claimed that he did not notice McCusker stuck under the vehicle and that he had sped away because he was being assaulted by Grobler.

Thamage said damage estimated at R1 500 was caused to his vehicle.
