Teachers plan strike to oust ‘incompetent’ headmaster

2012-08-29 09:24

Teachers at the Sanddrift Primary School outside Brits in North West will go on strike if the education department fails to hear their grievances about the school’s headmaster.

A former chairperson of the school’s governing body, Theuns Potgieter, has been asked by teachers and parents to help them bring an end to the 12-year battle to remove the headmaster from his post, Afrikaans daily Beeld reported today.

Potgieter claimed they have documentary evidence to prove that the headmaster, who has been in his current job for 17 years, is incompetent.

They claim he has poor management skills, never visits classrooms, fails to support teachers and has little interest in maintaining discipline, let alone the school grounds.

According to Potgieter, the education department held a disciplinary hearing against him in October last year, during which he was demoted.

The headmaster appealed against the ruling, and since then, nothing has happened, and he is still occupying his post.

When Beeld called the headmaster’s phone, it was told it had the wrong number and the phone was not answered again.

The education department reportedly told Beeld yesterday that it was unaware of the complaints, but would investigate the problem.
