Team SA intensifies chase for 43-medal target

Team SA will participate across nine codes at the Commonwealth Games today hoping to add some more medals to its haul of 36 that stood after Day 7 of competition.

The spotlight turns to Johan Cronje (1500m) and Khotso Mokoena (triple jump) and Rocco van Rooyen (javelin) who start their campaign this afternoon.

This after athletics contributed a gold and a bronze in the track events last night.

SA champion Cornel Fredericks won the 400m hurdles final in 48.50 while Andre Olivier secured bronze in 1:46.03 in the 800m medal race.

In the para-lawn bowls, Derrick Lobban, Roger Hagerty and Deon van der Vyver strode to a gold medal in the open triples.

South Africa goes into Day 9 still placed seventh on the medals table with two days of competition remaining.

At 36 medals, Team SA have surpassed the 33-haul from the 2010 Games in Delhi, India. They have targeted 43 medals this year.
