An 18-year-old teenager is missing after being swept out to sea in Muizenberg, Cape Town, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has said.

A 25-year-old woman, her 15-year-old niece and an 18-year-old not related to them were wading in the surf at Sunrise Beach yesterday at about 5.30pm when they were caught in a rip current and swept out to sea, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

The 15-year-old was rescued by the woman’s husband and she was rescued by a bystander.

“Lifeguards ... initiated a search for the 18-year-old male who had disappeared under the water,” he said.

By last night he had not been found. A police dive unit took over the ongoing search operation.
