Racial polarisation in the hometown of murdered AWB leader Eugene

A few hundred ANC and AWB supporters have been gathered since early

this morning outside the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court, where the trial is

scheduled to be heard.

Earlier on, an AWB member spilled a drink into the crowd of mostly

black ANC supporters, some of whom have come from as far as Ekurhuleni (East

Rand) to attend the court appearance of the accused murderers. The gathered ANC

supporters responded by loudly heckling before the police intervened. AWB

supporters sang the old anthem, Die Stem, to which ANC supporters responded by

singing the new national anthem in full.

In another incident, the AWB crowd went into a jubilant roar,

taunting the police as their Inyanda fell into a pit by the roadside.

Sapa reported that the crowd sang “O, help ’n

bietjie daar (lend a hand)”, with some of the white people shouting “find a boer

and a tractor” and laughing at the police as they struggled to complete their

task of separating the two groups. The white group then sang “Bobbejaan klim die

berg (Baboon climbs the mountain)” before a farmer appealed for calm.
