Ten arrested for dog fighting

2011-05-16 14:34

Ten people have been arrested in Plettenberg Bay for suspected involvement in an organised dog fighting syndicate, the SPCA said today.

Police, accompanied by the SPCA, raided the smallholding where the dog fights were being held on the weekend, after receiving a tip-off, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesperson Vonny Strachan said.

Eight pitbull terriers were confiscated and two of them treated for injuries sustained during fighting.

One of those arrested was apparently a Western Cape agriculture department employee, Strachan said.

It was believed the dog fight interrupted by the raid was “of significance in the dog fighting world” because individuals from Cape Town, Johannesburg and East London were present, she said.

Those arrested were granted R1 500 bail each.
