Ten tasks for the ANC’s next ten years

2012-04-11 07:46

In its policy discussion document on organisational renewal, the ANC says its national elective conference in Mangaung in December should be a watershed event and should adopt a programme of action for 2012 to 2022.

This is a summary:
1. Strengthen the ANC so that it can give political leadership to the state, the economy, civil society and internationally.

2. Renew relationship with alliance partners Cosatu and the SACP as well as with NGOs and civil organisations and revitalise the ANC’s grassroots structures to focus on solving problems and making the masses central to development and governance processes.

3. Set up a political school and train cadres in organisational values, but also ensure that members get general education, skills development and academic training. Deploy cadres with appropriate skills to government and other relevant positions.

4. Fast-track large-scale infrastructure development and enhance the capacity of the state to intervene in key sectors of the economy in pursuit of higher growth rates, employment creation and broad-based empowerment.

5. Take urgent steps to develop the capacity of the democratic state so that it can act truly as a developmental state that can drive transformation. This can be done by employing people with the appropriate skills.

6. Take urgent and practical steps to restore the party’s core values, stem out factionalism and promote political discipline.

7. Encourage ANC members and leaders to improve their literacy rate, skills and levels of education, and help improve learning and teaching in schools.

8. Deepen the party’s contribution to the renewal of the African continent and the strengthening of progressive forces of the world.

9. Professionalise and modernise the ANC’s operations by upgrading technology used for membership systems and for communicating with its members, core constituency and and society in general.

10. The ANC must work with young people in all sectors and social strata and win them over to the party’s ideological and political views.
