The MTN Festival at Montecasino is fast becoming a must-do yearly social fixture on the Joburg scene. Lesley Mofokeng recommends 10 things to do from Wednesday.

1Katherine Jenkins

The Welsh mezzo-soprano stages two concerts at The Teatro at Montecasino.

She performs her unique versions of popular songs, operatic arias and hymns with a 24-piece orchestra.

Jenkins has shared the stage with music legends Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, and her repertoire includes Ave Maria, Caruso, Time To Say Goodbye and Pie Jesu. Complete the concert with oysters and bubbly at participating venues.

Jenkins performs on Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm. Tickets from R300 at or through Computicket.

2Patrizio Buanne

On Saturday the Italian baritone crooner will perform an intimate set at The Teatro.

He is known for his charm and inimitable style as he sings songs that earned him acclaim in the US, Australia and the Far East. He has been performing in South Africa for a few years and local fans can’t get enough.

Buanne perfoms at The Teatro on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets start from R250 at Computicket.

3Trevor Noah

The comedian turns Montecasino into his stomping ground as he takes up residence from Monday, September 23 to October 10.

Noah will delight audiences with his wise cracks at The Teatro after his six-nation tour as he performs new material from his show It’s My Culture.

The funnyman will then return from September 30 to October 13.

Tickets from R120 at

4Mi Casa

The dance maestros have just released their follow- up album, Su Casa, and their single Jika is causing damage on the dance floors across the country.

Enjoy their sound as part of the Music on the Piazza Sunday series.

Others billed to perform include Elvis Blue and Dan Patlansky (September 22 at 12.30pm), and Louise Carver (September 29 at 1pm), among others.

Catch Mi Casa on September 29 at 1pm.

5Joyous Celebration

This award-winning gospel ensemble is a crowd puller.

For the past decade, they have become an Easter tradition.

Now you can see them in action next Friday and Saturday at The Teatro under the baton of their co-founder, Lindelani Mkhize, as they perform hymns and choruses inspired by the Zionist movement, Negro spirituals and modern-day pop.

Joyous Celebration performs on September 27 and 28. Visit for details.

6Mamma Mia!

Catch free screenings of movies on the Piazza.

On Saturday night, sing along to Abba music while enjoying performances by the great Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia!

Also showing is Rio.

Known as Movies on the Piazza, this open-air experience should go down well over the pleasant spring nights.

On October 4, see Despicable Me and Grease.

7Tops at Spar Bierfest

Bavaria comes to the Montecasino Outdoor Event Area from October 10 to 13.

This festival is a recreation of the Bavarian beer festivals of old, complete with bier halls, wooden bier benches, Fräuleins, mouth-watering Bavarian treats, Bavarian accessories to add to the fun, plus world-class entertainment, including a live Oompah band.

Tickets start from R100 at

8Kids Playground at the Montecasino Bird Gardens

Take your children out from this Saturday for a magical world of attractions, such as sand art, face-painting, stilt walkers, magicians, ceramic painting, games and giveaways.

Kids Playground runs until September 24 from 10am to 4pm.

Entry into the Montecasino Bird Gardens is R20 for kids, R35 for adults and R20 for pensioners.

9Big Bad Musical

The enchanted Montecasino Ballroom will be turned into a fairy tale court to accommodate one of the biggest trials against the notorious Big Bad Wolf.

In the witness stand will be Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and all who are the Big Bad Wolf’s foes.

Also on stage is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard at the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre. See Big Bad Musical on Friday, October 11 to 13. Tickets cost R50 at Computicket.

10Taste of Joburg

Visit the Montecasino Outdoor Event Area for the foodies festival. At least 12 of Joburg’s top restaurants will create special menus of starter-sized dishes, including their signature dishes created by their chefs.

There are boutique exhibitors, artisan producers, gourmet street food, premium drink brands and award-winning wineries.

The festival runs from September 26 to 29. Tickets from R80 available at
