They don’t take kindly to threats. They are vengeful and deceitful. And we love to hate them. Siyabonga Sithole counts 10 of the best TV soapie villains

Robert Whitehead

1 Barker Haines (Robert Whitehead)

Isidingo, SABC3 7.30pm

He is a corrupt, vindictive son of a bitch who rose to power Sol Kerzner-style. A self-made businessman to whom money is power and family plays second fiddle.

He is, however, a loving father to his one and only remaining son, Jody. In a classic soapie story line, his son Duncan was murdered by his (Haines’) ex-wife, Cherel.

His daughter Lee Haines also died, leaving him a lonely and broken man. Though aging and afflicted by a heart condition, Haines shows no signs of slowing down.

He is currently involved in a tussle with his brother Albert, who has recently resurfaced to claim his share of the inheritance, along with his (Albert’s) son Bradley Haines, who is an injured rugby player.

Jamie Bartlett.

2 David Genaro (Jamie Bartlett)

Rhythm City, weekdays 6.30pm

The king of Greek/Shakespearean metaphors, Genaro makes for good entertainment. He is charming and smooth, yet cunning and calculating as the wicked puppet master.

Genaro gets his ultimate kick out of pulling the strings and getting people to do things for him, leaving lies, deceit and murder in his trail.

Bartlett has played this character since 2007, and there have been countless murders and corporate takeovers.

The man with a flawless script on “steroids” appeared to have lost it all a couple of times, but fought to get back on his feet by reinventing himself.

Right now he is busy with a master plan that will see DH, played by Siyabonga Thwala, bite the dust. Riveting stuff!

Dawn Matthews.

3 Shakira Nyathi (Dawn Matthews)

Scandal, 7.30pm

Shakira is intelligent and devious. She will do practically anything to get what she wants and to build herself up. Her marriage to Daniel Nyathi (Sello Maake ka-Ncube) is one of convenience.

She is a manipulator who has wormed her way back into the editorship position at NFH yet again.

She used Joe (Daniel’s NFH spy) to help her to blackmail Helen (Fiona Ramsay) out of the editor in chief job at NFH – a position that Shakira then assumed.

And when in a position of power and authority, Shakira gleefully rubs it in the faces of those below her and picks fights with those who threaten her.

Sello Maake ka-Ncube

4 Daniel Nyathi (Sello Maake ka-Ncube)

Scandal, 7.30pm

Family means nothing to Nyathi, except when it suits him. He will kill, eliminate and neutralise even his own brother and son if they threaten him.

The power-drunk Nyathi even faked his identity.

Try to follow this: Nyathi is not the real Daniel Nyathi. He is Lucas Nyathi, the cousin of Stan and the real Daniel Nyathi, who goes by the name Cain Gumede.

Confused yet? Me too. Nyathi has criminal associations with the underworld and lives by the law of the jungle.

5 Samson Ndlovu (Bheki Mkhwane)

Isibaya, Mzansi Magic 8.30pm

Ndlovu is a patriarch – a strong, fierce and calculating taxi owner from the West valley and the principal voice of the taxi association.

His smooth and seemingly reconciliatory manner belies his corrupt activities. He turned Mpiyakhe (Siyabonga Thwala) into a zombie and his business practices leave a lot to be desired.

He is a complex character in that he is a proud father who still believes in the sanctity of family values. But alas, Ndlovu has recently disowned his son Sbu (Sdumo Mtshali).

Michelle Botes. Picture: Joyrene Kramer

6 Cherel de Villiers (Michelle Botes)

Isidingo, SABC3 7.30pm

Cherel is the proverbial cat with nine lives. She is a shrewd and evil businesswoman who would cheat, steal, abduct and kill to get ahead in life. The queen of Horizon Deep, Cherel knows poverty as she grew up in a poor and abusive household.

She has no morals and would even sleep with her husband’s sons for sheer pleasure or when circumstances force her to. Men too can’t resist her deceptive charms and so they fall prey. Barker Haines is the only surviving ex-husband.

Actor Menzi Ngubane who plays Sibusiso Dlomo on local soapie Generations.

7 Sibusiso Dlomo (Menzi Ngubane)

Generations, SABC1 8pm

The vengeful businessman who is currently wheelchair bound is still at his cunning best even after nearly losing his life in prison.

He likes ordering people around at will and his gay son-in-law Jason (Zolisa Xaluva) knows the bad end of his venom, as well as his half-brother, Phenyo (Melusi Yeni). Known as Ngamla in his circles, his enemies are forever watching their backs.

He is evil, but also loves his family and would do anything to protect them. He recently escaped death at the hands of his long-lost son, MJ Memela (Anga Makubalo).

Their newly found father-son relationship is already a murky affair after they burnt down the bar Tsalanang to conceal the murder of Kimberley, MJ’s aunt.

Thembi Nyandeni. Picture: Isibaya

8 Mkabayi Zungu (Thembi Nyandeni)

Isibaya, Mzansi Magic 8.30pm

The mighty Mpiyakhe (Siyabonga Thwala) is now an umkhovu (zombie) and in his absence steps in Mkabayi, his sister who is fast taking over the business affairs in the brutal male-dominated taxi industry.

The pugnacious, abrasive, tough-talking matriarch of the family in KwaZulu-Natal moves into a more high-profile public and political position in the business. Mkabayi does not suffer fools. She is sassy and smart, if not brave.

For her role, Nyandeni is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress at the Royalty Soapie Awards.

Rami Chuene

9 Khomotjo Mojalefa (Rami Chuene)

Muvhango, SABC2 9pm

There is a new bitch in town. Move over KK. Take cover Teboho. Khomotjo is about to trample all over you in her stilettoes and her perfectly manicured nails are ready for a good scratching match.

Since the death of her sugar daddy husband, Khomotjo has not wasted time mourning. She has stepped up her game of moving into a palatial house and taking control of Mukwevho Milling, her stepson Tumelo (Buyile Mdladla) in tow.

Will our villain eventually sink her nails into Tumelo and sleep with him. We watch with keen interest.

Zenande Mfenyana. Picture: Happy Baloyi

10 Noluntu Memela (Zenande Mfenyana)

Generations, SABC1 8pm

The bad girl of Generations is at last trying to atone herself for the wrongs of the past. She drove her own mother to madness, almost killing her by spiking her tea with pills.

When she realised that Senzo Dlomo (Thami Mngqolo), the father of her son, wouldn’t commit, she gave her son Mnqobi up for adoption.

The Dlomos intercept and bring the child into their household. It took convincing and her turn of fortunes for Noluntu to finally connect with Mnqobi.

She started as an intern at Yona Yethu and soon became editor in chief of Style Avenue before her fall from grace when she ended up as Scott Nomvete’s (Luthuli Dlamini) PA.
