The F Word: Why did we stay?

2011-02-21 13:14

Farrah Francis wonders why she and 800 other guests didn’t get up and walk off the Nelson Mandela Bridge on Saturday night.

By now everyone knows about the fiasco on the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

You know, the fashion show where the designer kept people waiting on a bridge for two hours on an oddly cold Jozi night.

It’s David Tlale of course.

Would I have waited two hours for a friend who never pitched at a restaurant? No.

Would I have waited two hours in the cold on a bridge for a partner who never pitched? No. So Why didn’t we just get up and walk away?

Does Tlale have so much pull that he can get the crowds to stay?

Have we as the media and his fans elevated him to such a level that he believes that he has earned the right to disrespectfully keep people waiting?

I wouldn’t accept this behaviour from my closest friend. Not my from my partner yet I put up with it from a man I barely know.

Yes, there were a few that walked off that bridge – Jenna Dover and her partner, for example. And a group of four a few seats away from me.

But, instead of following their lead, some of those who were left standing grabbed their seats in furious delight, as if winning a prize.

Surely, by hanging around we were saying: “Hey, it’s okay, David. Your behaviour is acceptable.”

In my case, it was curiosity that kept me hanging on by my frozen finger tips. There must be something amazing in his show, I consoled myself as the minutes ticked by.

I can’t speak for the other guests who stuck around on Saturday night, but I am ashamed of myself for being tricked into believing that anyone is worth my precious time.

Next time I’ll walk my fake Louboutins right out of there.
