The Miss SA graveyard on TV

2010-05-15 17:44

In their moment of

glory, their eyes glisten with tears, their blindingly white teeth are on

display and their shaking hands wave regally to their fans.

This is the moment most beauty queens will tell you they have

fantasised about all their lives – crown, sash, flowers and a shower of

Sadly for most of them this is the height of their career and that

stage is usually where their glory ends.

Unless of course you live in South Africa where any former Miss SA

is guaranteed a spot on the one and only – drum roll please – Top Billing!

Miss South Africa 2008, Tatum Keshwar, is the latest to join the

Proof that Top Billing is the grazing ground for old beauty pageant

winners is most certainly in the proverbial pudding as Keshwar joins Jo-Ann

Strauss, Michael Mol, Kereshnie Naicker (a brief stint for her), Basetsana

Kumalo and former Miss SA runner-up Dhiveja Sundrum.

Presenting talent is irrelevant since the criteria is obviously

to have a face for TV, a figure for designer samples and a girly giggle.

As glamorous as the show seems, it has the same effect as a best

actress Oscar and spells the death of your public career.

Think about it: has any former Top Billing presenter gone on to

have a blazing career in TV, film, music?or?the?arts??I don’t think so!

So, while many of us go green with envy when we see them

jet-setting and living the high life, at least we can rest easy knowing that we

haven’t committed career suicide just yet.
