The art of last-minute shopping

2010-12-17 11:20

Christmas is just around the corner and if you are still looking to

find a few unique gifts or spoil yourself this holiday, visit the KwaZulu-Natal

Society of Arts Gallery in Durban.

At the arts gallery, the Buzzart annual festive shopping fair is now on. It has been running for several

years now, and has taken the idea of Christmas shopping and placed it into an art gallery context.

The large exhibition offers a varied selection of gift-giving

inspiration, from home-made crafts and artworks to an eclectic mix of innovative

and original items. This is a great place to support locals who are designing,

and making and selling a wonderful array of interesting things.

The event showcases the most popular local designers, including the

“Shwe Shwe poppi” stuffed textile key rings; a contemporary range of luminous

red and crisp-apple green cut-out Birch plywood Christmas trees; birds and

wreaths from Durban design studio Koop; bright Perspex and wooden jewellery and

accessories from designer Nicky Savage; and Guru Girl’s funky range of

T-shirts, badges, stickers and bags.

I picked up some real treasures. Among my finds were jars of

delicious home-made marmalade (R25), a 2011 moon calendar (R55), French cider

and lime handmade soaps (R13), and some neat little wooden toys for toddlers

Also on offer is an assortment of exciting gifts, including

ceramics, jewellery, bags, rugs, journals, mosaics, toys, clothing, crafts,

home-made eats and Christmas cakes. There are a myriad decorations and stocking

fillers in wire, wood, glittering beads, and metals and glass.

Shoppers can relax at the on-site Arts Café and enjoy a light meal

or cappuccino between browsing, while children amuse themselves on the jungle

gym and swings.
