Wednesday night belonged to Thando Thabethe, the new(ish) presenter of etv’s music show Club 808.

The new arrival was charged with MC duties and thereby claimed her rightful place in the galaxy of stars in this town and as the first lady of the Club.

She has been on the screen for the past few months and this was her big moment to shine.

While the spotlight was firmly on Thabethe, the purpose of the dinner party was to toast the new time slots for Scandal! and Club 808.

The two have swapped slots, with the popular soapie gaining an extra day on Friday (starting tonight) as the music show moves to a Saturday slot.

The event was held at the intimate, metallic interior, Cantare Dinner and Dance in Montecasino in Fourways.

This stylish venue did not outshine Thabethe who donned a skin tight nora (a shade of orange) dress. Ilse van Hemert, the producer of Scandal!, proudly spoke about the plans for the soapie.

However, my heart broke for her when I noticed how she matched the drapes and the stage curtains with her shiny olive Chinese-styled jacket. Worse still, she had to stand in front of the curtains. Shudder!

Apart from this faux pas, van Hemert is a great speaker, animated and engaging – no wonder Scandal! storylines are so riveting.

They are sitting with four million viewers every night.

One thing she promised is romance. Lots and lots. There’s a new couple to be revealed at the end of the year who will bring sexy back to Scandal!.

Club 808 producer Melody Xaba also took to the stage in a micro-mini skirt, but she didn’t show much flesh, opting for a pair of black tights.

The expectant Xaba boasted about the huge support they enjoy on social media with more than 140?000 followers on twitter. It’s true, Club 808 always trends when it’s on.

Showing face at the dimly lit joint were Kagiso Modupe, who plays Mangi, with his wife Liza. The couple kept disappearing from their table. Let’s not speculate, but it all looked suspicious...

Veteran actor Sello Maake kaNcube brought along a mysterious woman as his date. She seemed to have their table eating out of the palm of her hand.

The handsome Brighton Ngoma, who plays Quinton, attracted his fair share of admirers but took it all in his stride.

Monde Twala, etv channel head, mingled with the guests and made us all feel welcome with his accessibility.

Entertainment was supplied by jazz/swing/cabaret singer Jeremy Mitchell, who is really just a singer and not an entertainer.

Things kicked into gear when the seriously naughty and cheeky Vargas Girls flooded the stage.

They kept the audience begging for more with their seductive voices and impressively sexy dances and suggestive gestures.

They performed some popular songs from the Dreamgirls and Chicago soundtracks. Their burlesque and cabaret repertoire also had some breathy come-hither songs that should not be witnessed by under 18s.

» Catch Scandal tonight at 7.30pm and Club 808 tomorrow at 6.30pm
