Remarks attributed to President Jacob Zuma at the ANC’s anniversary gala in Durban last weekend have attracted scrutiny. He reportedly told business leaders that those who support the ruling party would ‘prosper’. Andile Ntingi spoke to five business leaders to get their opinions

The comments attributed to the president of the ANC should be considered within the context of the numerous abuses of procurement legislation and constitutional prescripts perpetrated by a number of government departments in the past few years.

Government is constitutionally bound to a fair, equitable and transparent procurement practice, and procurement legislation enforces this.

Businesses and businesspeople should be at the forefront of demonstrating sound governance and adherence to law and good practice, and should engage with government accordingly in their procurement relationships.

I would expect the ANC, and other political parties, to be consistent publicly in promoting the constitutional prescripts, and adherence to the legislation and regulations.

Such good governance and practice detracts from favouritism and cronyism of any kind.

One does not expect business to be “politically neutral”, but we should always promote good governance, sound constitutional principles and fair practice informed by sound legislation.
