The fast and the furious

2011-12-23 12:43

The looker - Audi R8 Spyder
The gorgeous drop-top is a stunner from every angle, and sounds as awesome as it looks - especially when the top is down since the engine is rear-mounted.

The 386kW of quattro power and 530Nm of torque make you squeal with pleasure.

The mindshift - Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG
Its predecessor looked like a tortoise in its shell.

But the styling here is better and although it still has the coupe silhouette, its shape is more attractive and pleasing to the eye.

The combination of a 5.5-litre engine with 386kW of grunting power and 700Nm of torque, taking corners is more fun than you can imagine.

The A-lister - Mini Coupe S
The hype around Minis is finally justified. This Coupe pulled at my petrol-pumping heart. It’s nippy, fun to drive and looks sporty with its helmet-shaped roof and spoiler. I like it!

The unexpected - Lexus IS350
Safe looks aside, this machine is all about what’s under the hood. The new engine makes it fun to drive - especially on an open road of twisty hairpins.

And it comes with all the bells and whistles to make it sweetly lavish inside.

For a luxury sedan with 233kW of power and eight airbags, the R500 000 price tag for the entry-level EX model is worth it.

The whoopee! - VW Scirocco R
The Scorro-scorro is one of the cars I had the most fun in this year. On the launch in Durban, I drove it so hard I was running on reserve.

And in Cape Town I had it for a week - in that audacious lime green colour that makes everyone’s head turn.

Who got it wrong:

Chrysler Sebring Convertible
I get shivers just thinking about it.

The build quality is awful, so is the use of materials and cheap plastic in the interior; and then there’s that whiney gearbox.

The roof takes forever to come back up too.

Toyota Innova
One of the ugliest cars launched, the outdated styling was a dead giveaway that this was unveiled to the world five years ago.

It’s like that distant aunty with the moustache and wet lips no one really wants to kiss at family gatherings.

Ford Fiesta sedan
Why mess with a good thing?

The big butt slapped on this old favourite made it lose cool points.

The automatic gearbox seemed confused and changes either too quickly or slowly.

That annoyance did not make for driving pleasure.
