The gospel according to Rebecca

2011-04-01 09:58

LM: After 31 albums, where do you get inspiration to write music?

RM: I think it’s something I have a passion for. It’s not through my strength, it’s God at work, the one who gives me the writing skills and keeps me going with music to spread His word.

LM: How many hymns can one release in such a long career?

RM: I believe in writing songs. I might have one or two hymns on the album, but most of the time I believe in writing new music.

LM: How has your style evolved over the years?

RM: I haven’t changed much, I still sing my traditional gospel the Rebecca way. I believe in remaining the Rebecca that people know.

LM: How important was it to you to collaborate with other artists?

RM: In other countries artists collaborate. We don’t do it enough.

By working with Sipho Makhabane, Sechaba and Sharon Dee, I wanted us to introduce togetherness in the gospel industry.

LM: What does the world need right now?

RM: Lots of prayers. Just for a moment, imagine an earthquake hitting South Africa.

Where will you be with God? We need to be aware, alert and ready. I pray that when that hour comes, I will be on God’s right hand.

LM: Between recording music and producing your TV show, which do you enjoy the most?

RM: I enjoy reaching people and meeting artists. Doing Gospel Time on SABC2 affords me the chance to do what I always wanted to do – I wanted to be a psychologist but I couldn’t go to school. But now, with the show and my music, I get to deal with people and their problems and help find solutions.
