» 1980: Born in rural Gcuwa and raised in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

» 1997: Matriculates from Vela School, a private school in Mthatha.

»1998: Starts her regular appearance at Peter Makurube’s Monday Blues in ­Yeoville. Writes her own songs and stops doing covers of other artists.

» 2004: Hits the big time with the ­release of her first album, Zandisile.

» 2005: While eight months pregnant with her son, Phalo, she is seriously ­injured in a car ­accident en route to a performance in Vereeniging.

The accident leaves her with a scar on her right cheek.

She gives birth to Phalo with partner and former manager Msa ­Xokelelo, who is also father to her ­daughter, ­Zandisile.

At the South African Music Awards (SAMA) she wins Best Vocal Jazz Album

and Best Newcomer awards.

She hits No 1 on the Billboard Music Charts for

the album Zandisile.

» 2006: She releases The One Love ­Movement on Bantu Biko Street.

While ­touring in

Switzerland, Dana ­receives the prestigious AVO Session Arising Star


» 2007: She tours Europe to promote her music and is well received.

Dana scoops Best Female Artist, Album of the Year, Best Contemporary

Jazz Album and Best Vocal Jazz Album at the ­SAMA awards for The One

Love Movement ­album.

» 2008: Dana is nominated in the BBC Radio 3 Awards for Best Artist in the

category World Music – Africa.

» 2010: She makes her film debut with a role in Themba: A Boy Called Hope.

Releases her third album, Kulture Noir.

Becomes an ambassador for Hokisa, a charity organisation that cares for children living with and affected by HIV/Aids.
