The people who hold the power: Andile Peter

2012-11-24 12:50

Although Peter has been a member of the ANC since “I was at primary school during the early 1980s”, he believes his affiliation with the party started long before that.

“I was born an ANC member,” says the 53-year-old chairman of Du Noon’s Oliver Tambo branch.

Politics is his life. Asked what he does when he’s not running his branch, he replies: “I conduct meetings, organise meetings and guide the constituency of the ANC on developments regarding the ANC’s decisions and policies.”

That’s not actually his day job, though. He is a businessman involved in “the security industry and properties”.

The married father of four joined the ANC all those years ago because of “its values, beliefs and the constitution it upholds”.

“When I joined the organisation, it was the only organisation to emancipate the lives of poor people. I have been a member for a long time and to me it is like a family.”

His branch has a simple mandate for him when he goes to Mangaung next month: change the leadership.

“For president, we need Kgalema Motlanthe. For deputy president, we’ll go for Mathews Phosa.”

He’s concerned about a lack of discipline in the party and hopes Mangaung will help to heal the cracks. “At the moment there is
no unity and no discipline.

People do as they please.”
