The people who hold the power: Thandi Pat Ndlovu

2012-11-10 11:16

Ndlovu (50) is a full-time councillor for Ward 29. That’s Copesville, which falls in the Moses Mabhida (Pietermaritzburg) region. She’s currently serving her second term.

A married mother of six who joined the ANC in 1984, Ndlovu was a full-time party volunteer in her ward before becoming a councillor.

Ndlovu says she joined the ANC because she saw at the time that it was the organisation most active in fighting apartheid and trying to improve the lives of black people.

After the election of the first democratic government, she saw that there was a role for her as a representative of her community.
This is why she is still in the party today, she says.

“I realised that this was the best way for me to help people in my community.”

Her top-six slate for Mangaung is Jacob Zuma for president, Cyril Ramaphosa (deputy president), Gwede Mantashe (secretary-general), Jessie Duarte (deputy secretary-general), Baleka Mbete (national chairperson) and Zweli Mkhize (treasurer-general).

Ndlovu believes the most critical issue for the ANC at Mangaung will be organisational transformation aimed at renewing the party.
She will travel with her fellow delegates on a bus provided by the ANC and will stay in the party-sponsored accommodation in Mangaung.
