Blonde, bubbly and giddy. The diva of South African theatre, Anne Power, was a force of nature on Tuesday night when she hosted a legion of businesswomen at a networking session, in partnership with Brand-ed.

Looking enticing in a long, black evening dress with a plunging neckline, open-toed heels and bright-pink long nails, Power was in command of her audience from the moment she gulped down a mouthful of wine before launching into her speech.

The session, a motivational talk about how to get your mojo back, and a prelude to the release of her movie, To the Power of Anne, was held at the popular Randlords rooftop lounge on the 22nd floor of South Point Towers in Braamfontein, Joburg.

“I’m terrified about the movie release. I mean, who wants to see a movie about a 50-plus woman, anyway?

“Well, tough luck! They’re going to see it,” she said.

After a sneak preview, I understand her jitters. The “mockumentary” is rather awkward. The best part, however, is Dawn Lindberg playing Power’s mum and looking infinitely younger than her “daughter”.

Battle-scarred, but standing tall in her black stilettos, the former Mrs Bill Flynn (the late comedian) also had sombre moments.

“On hitting 50, I suddenly found myself single, broke and alone.

“So I took a 30-year-old lover built like a brick s**t house and had myself some fun!”

Then came “that random moment” when sponsors Ingrid Katz from Pure Aesthetics, and plastic and reconstructive surgeon Gabriel Doucas took to the mic.

There were bemused expressions when Doucas pronounced the ageing process “the root of all evil”. Fortunately Katz rescued the moment when she announced that guests could score free consultations and non-invasive enhancement treatments, proving girls will be girls after all.

We dined on bowls of herbed mash and salmon, chicken curry cubes on fragrant rice and creamy gnocchi. Dessert was decadent fig caramel brownie squares. The Tukulu wines also went down well.

To the Power of Anne will be released nationwide later this month. It is a scream!
