Some of SA’s top musicians tell Thembisile Dzonzi and Siyabonga Sithole which artists will own 2015 Cassper Nyovest *?Riky Rick

Cassper Nyovest rocked it in 2014. Who does he think will be the star of SA hip-hop this year?

He votes for artist and producer Riky Rick of Amantombazane fame. “He has already had a few tracks this year. With an album [Family Values] due in 2015, he stands a good chance of making it big,” says Nyovest. Hugh Masekela *?Kesivan Naidoo According to legendary jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela, young drummer Kesivan Naidoo – who won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2009 – is one artist to look out for this year. “These young artists have just played in New York and make beautiful jazz,” says Bra Hugh of Naidoo and his band, The Lights. “Google them.” Nakhane Touré *?Moonchild

Nakhane Touré has chosen electro vocalist Moonchild as his breakout artist for 2015. “Blue-haired, sassy, irreverent, funny and fun. I first heard I Would Die 4 U sampling Rabubi and thought: ‘Okay, Xhosa girl from PE. This is cool. What do you have next?’ Go Sterring and its strobe-lit video sealed the deal for me. There’s something new about her; something slightly dangerous and naughty.” Nandi Mngoma *?Mashayabhuqe KaMamba

According to presenter and singer Nandi Mngoma, hip-hop artist Mashayabhuqe KaMamba is going places.

“The streets know him, but I reckon this gentlemen is about to blow up. He prides himself on his rural Zulu roots and modernises the traditional sound with his amazing flow and rhymes.” She says we should also keep an eye on Oskido’s son, young producer Bass. J Something *?Tellaman and DJ Shimza

Tellaman “In 2015, I think we need to watch for Tellaman ... and DJ Shimza from YFM. My money is on these two young artists,” says J Something from the hit machine Mi Casa. “Tellaman is a great vocalist and producer with an album coming in the Soul Candi Sessions 2015 five-disc offering ... and DJ Shimza, who is going to release his album soon, is a talented dude.” Nhlanhla Nciza *?Jankie Makopa The Mafikizolo sensation has picked Jankie Makopa and his Setswana hip-hop vibes. “This kid does rap in a different, traditional and jazzy way. With a recently released album, he will definitely be big in the new year,” says Nciza. Black Motion *?Napoleon, Xoli M and DJ Merlon Thabo Mabogwane of tribal dance music makers Black Motion says we should look out for three artists: Napoleon (The Lazy Song), Xoli M (Set Me Free and Rainbow) and DJ Merlon. “These artists are making relevant music that will be hot in the coming year. And people already love them,” says Mabogwane. Sechaba Pali *?Thobe Apart from his own brand-new album, controversial gospel singer Pali says the gospel artist to look out for this year is Thobe, born Thobekile Masinga. “I think she will get her shine on as she has been working hard over the past few years, having worked with Joyous Celebrations earlier in her career,” he says. DJ Zinhle *?Miss Pru

Miss Pru

With a successful career as a producer on the South African dance music scene, DJ Zinhle has seduced us with her mad musical mixing. She has seen many young female DJs rise through the ranks at her Fuse Academy deejaying school in Newtown, Joburg.

One dynamo she feels has done enough to deserve a big break in the new year is Miss Pru. “She has done enough legwork and deserves a great year in 2015,” says the entrepreneurial DJ.
